Sustainability

What is Sustainable Living

Sustainable homes operate with reduced carbon emissions, minimize all forms of environmental impact and promote renewal energy.  Many sustainable and “Green” new home benefits include lower utility bills, improved living comfort and reduced maintenance.

The National Green Building Standard has identified six green/sustainable categories that are recommended to achieve sustainability:

  • Site Design, Preparation and Development is where sustainability starts. Designs should include low impact strategies that are designed to manage storm events.
  • Resource Efficiency includes using certain recycled material including precut, precast and preassembled products.
  • Energy Efficiency is key to all sustainable homes. This includes efficient heating/ventilation/air conditioning systems, water heaters, kitchen appliances, lighting, windows, insulation “R” factors and radiant roof barriers.
  • Water Efficiency both inside the home in the yard that includes low flow showerheads and irrigation control systems.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality which includes tight building designs, filtered air handling, heating and cooling equipment and minimal volatile organic compounds (VOC) in paints, adhesives and sealants.
  • Operating, Maintenance and Education materials for homeowners
